Istria is widely known for its gastronomic and oenological uniqueness, home to many high-quality wines, prosciutto, cheese, olive oil, and mushrooms. This region boasts rich forests, hills, and valleys, and it’s these natural blessings and geographical diversity that have allowed the development of a rich tradition of gathering and using mushrooms in the local cuisine.

The mushroom-gathering tradition of Istria is not a recent phenomenon; it dates back centuries and has deep roots in the rural life of the peninsula. Ancient inhabitants of Istria, such as the Histrians and Romans, used mushrooms in their diets. However, mushroom gathering in Istria is not just an activity for food; it’s also an opportunity for communal gatherings and connecting with nature. People of all ages participate in mushroom picking during the season, which usually runs from September to December, with favorable growth conditions due to rainy periods. This is the time when Istria’s forests become rich with a wide variety of mushrooms of all kinds, and there are truly many of them. Thanks to its geographical diversity, Istria is home to a diverse range of mushrooms. Here, you can find many edible mushrooms like porcini, chanterelles, beech mushrooms, parasol mushrooms, truffles, and poisonous mushrooms as well. Therefore, when gathering mushrooms, caution is essential, and seeking expert advice in case of doubt is highly recommended.

Despite the diversity, among the mushrooms of the largest Croatian peninsula, truffles stand out the most, being considered the king of mushrooms. Istrian truffles are believed to be among the finest in the world. They are most abundant in the Mirna River valley, with Motovun Forest being particularly noteworthy due to its soil type, which is ideal for truffle growth. Truffles are fungi with a unique aroma and taste, highly valued and sought after worldwide. They grow 10 to 30 cm below the ground, which is why dogs or pigs are used in their harvesting.

A variety of mushrooms, and especially truffles, are a significant ingredient in many traditional Istrian dishes. Istrian chefs, mothers, and grandmothers skillfully combine mushrooms with local ingredients such as olive oil, white wine, garlic, and various vegetables to create unique flavors and dishes. One of the most famous dishes is mushroom omelet, often prepared with truffles for an extra touch of luxury.

However, culinary pursuits are not the only areas in which mushrooms play a significant role. Indeed, the Istrian mushroom-gathering tradition has become a notable tourist attraction. Many tourists come to Istria to experience the unique cuisine associated with mushrooms and truffles or to participate in mushroom picking. Additionally, each year in the fall, during the truffle season, numerous truffle-related fairs and events take place throughout Istria, attracting visitors from Croatia and abroad.

Thanks to its great importance to the region, mushroom gathering in Istria is not just a generational activity; it’s a crucial aspect of Istrian identity. The local population is aware of the importance of preserving this tradition. Today, in Istria, numerous associations and organizations are dedicated to researching, promoting, and preserving mushroom gathering. These organizations host educational events, mushroom identification courses, harvesting activities, and also promote sustainable mushroom gathering and environmental preservation for future generations.

Of course, these organizations are particularly active during the autumn when the mushroom season is in full swing. Therefore, we recommend that you join one of the mushroom-gathering activities, picking, or fairs and find your well-deserved rest from mushroom hunting in the best accommodation in the region, available on the Molo Longo agency’s website.
