Planning annual leave is rarely an easy task for anyone. It involves considering the options available at the workplace and coordinating them with family needs and desires. When we add the constraint of financial possibilities, the whole thing can become even more complicated. However, it is important to keep in mind that these are still sweet concerns – we are planning a vacation and leisure time with the people we love. The first step in this planning is to take a look at the calendar.

First and foremost, we need to consider public holidays. Considering these dates helps us maximize our days off and create the ideal time for relaxation and exploration of beautiful destinations throughout our country. Unfortunately, 2024 didn’t bring much joy to the citizens of the Republic of Croatia in this regard: namely, three holidays fall on weekends, and this is in a leap year. Admittedly, one of them is Easter, which we forgive, but it’s hard to have understanding for Epiphany (January 6) and Antifascist Struggle Day (June 22) falling on weekends. Similarly, two holidays this year fall mercilessly on the same day (Statehood Day and Corpus Christi – May 30). However, it falls on a Thursday, making it ideal for connecting with the upcoming weekend, and the same opportunity arises for Assumption of Mary (August 15) and St. Stephen’s Day (December 26). Labor Day (May 1) falls on a Wednesday, which few will connect with the weekend, but it’s not impossible. However, not everyone has the possibility to connect Tuesday or Thursday with the weekend at their workplace, but holidays falling on Friday or Monday can bring joy, creating a three-day weekend: New Year’s Day (January 1), Easter Monday (April 1), Victory Day (August 5), All Saints’ Day (November 1), and Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Homeland War (November 18). These extended weekends are a unique opportunity to escape from everyday stress and go to another environment, to the sea, nature, or another city…

In addition to public holidays, school holidays are also important, especially for families with school-age children. The school holidays for this year are as follows: from January 1 to 7, from February 17 to 25, from March 28 to April 7, and from June 22 to, probably, September 1. We say probably because the calendar for the next school year is still unknown, and it is expected to bring short holidays around November 1 as in previous years, as well as winter holidays from December 21. It is known that during school holidays, many parents with children go on vacation, especially to visit family members living outside their place of residence.

All the mentioned dates are highly sought-after terms for annual leave at workplaces throughout Croatia. However, this also means that they result in massive temporary migrations within the country, usually from the interior to the coast, and thus greater traffic on highways and tourist destinations. If you decide to travel during one of these peak periods, arm yourself with patience when traveling to your destination, or even better, if possible, start your vacation a day before others.
But if you are among those who love peace and quiet, we advise you to stay away from popular tourist destinations on all the mentioned dates, and avoid the sea between July 15 and August 15, the peak of the tourist season.

And whenever you go on vacation, the best accommodation on the Adriatic is always ready for you, available through the Molo Longo agency.
